Urban Living: A Modern Rooftop Oasis | Savannah, Georgia

The owners wanted a rooftop living area but historic preservation regulations mandated it could not be visible from a public space.

The primary challenge was to develop a solution that would facilitate convenient rooftop access, ensure the home's protection from external factors, and maintain concealment from public view.

The solution: A custom made 800 pound glass hatch access made in England that opens & closes at the touch of a button.

Before the hatch arrived, the team completed the attic-level stairs and relocated rooftop components to clear the way for the upcoming construction phase.

During the early morning hours of delivery day, the roof was cut open and the remaining stairs were constructed. Upon arrival the crated hatch was lifted onto the roof, unpacked and re-secured to the crane, and the glass hatch was set into the roof framing. The emptied crate was subsequently utilized to remove all construction debris from the roof and crane up the new deck materials.

Access to the roof is managed by dual-location controls: an interior push-button panel inset into the wall with a battery backup system, and a secure, keyed control box on the exterior.

The finished stairwell leading to the roof includes a landing positioned near the roof access. This area features a removable railing system designed to facilitate the easy movement of large items into the attic. Additionally, the landing provides access to the mechanical room and includes a built-in beverage refrigerator for added convenience.

Dimmable LED lighting was installed beneath the deck rails, providing gentle illumination during the evening hours. This thoughtful design choice enhances the ambiance without obstructing the breathtaking view of the evening skyline. A rooftop hose bib was added for convenient cleaning and maintenance of the new space.

The completed space features sleek metal cabling, an integrated drink rail, and high-performance composite decking, establishing a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Designed as a tranquil retreat, the area offers expansive views that harmoniously bridge the natural surroundings with the urban landscape.
