Creating a modern spa with old world details | Savannah, Georgia

Designer Shelbie Bemis was tasked with transforming the homeowners' ordinary bathroom into a luxurious retreat that seamlessly blends modern sophistication with timeless Old World charm.

The original bathroom lacked thoughtful space planning, resulting in a layout that felt cramped and disconnected. A small shower stall and tub were tightly positioned against the vanity, limiting both functionality and visual openness. On the opposite end of the room, an awkward knee wall separated the toilet, creating an unbalanced layout that interrupted the overall flow.

The bathroom was completely gutted and reimagined with an open, thoughtfully planned layout that maximizes both space and functionality. Plumbing was relocated to accommodate the new tub and shower layout, while structural bracing was installed to support a custom floating vanity with elegant quartz slab detailing.

The walls and ceiling were finished in Tadelakt. Tadelakt is an ancient waterproof lime plaster originating in Marrakesh, Morocco and is celebrated for its seamless appearance, hand-polished stone-like texture, and exceptional performance in wet environments, This brings warmth, depth, and an artisanal quality to the space where spa-inspired retreat where timeless craftsmanship meets modern luxury.

The finished bathroom embodies functional luxury, with the seamless Tadelakt finish accentuating the space and enhancing its open, airy feel. Its organic texture and timeless character create a serene backdrop, allowing the refined fixtures and custom details to shine while delivering a sophisticated retreat designed for everyday living.

The application of Tadelakt transformed the space into a fully integrated wet room, creating a spa-like experience within the home. The seamless finish allowed the Japanese soaking tub, walk-in shower, and floating vanity to coexist comfortably within the open layout, providing a sense of balance, tranquility, and spaciousness without feeling crowded.
